Sermon Handout
- Acts 16
- Acts 16:17
- Matthew 4:1-11
Acts 16:17 (KJV) 17The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation.
- “the devils also believe, and tremble” James 2:19 (Gk. pisteuo = to place confidence in) The proof of belief in Jesus is trust and obedience to Jesus.
- Be careful, even the devil can “quote” scripture. Incorrectly.
Matthew 4:1 – 11 (NASB) 1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He £then became hungry.
3And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” [The Lord quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 to defeat Satan. Feeding on and obeying God’s Word is more important than consuming physical food. (John 4:32-34)]. 5Then the devil took* Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,
6and said* to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
What God did say | What God did NOT say |
Genesis 2:17 (NASB) 11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hand That you do not strike your foot against a stone. | Genesis 3:3 (NASB)3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” Matthew 4:6 (NASB) for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” |
It is important for us as believers to read all Scripture, and study all God has to say, for all of it is profitable for daily life (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
(Saving) Faith comes by hearing God’s Word—–Rom. 10:17
Acts 16:25 – 30 (KJV)
25And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
27And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
What happened?
The jailor heard the Word.
44“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:44 (NASB)
“No one comes to the Father, but through Me”. John 14:6
12There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 (NLT)
17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (KJV)
The jailor heard the Word and repented.
Acts 3:19 (NASB) 19“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 26:20 (NLT) 20I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must repent of their sins and turn to God—and prove they have changed by the good things they do.
1 Corinthians 2:3 (NLT) 3I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling.
Philippians 2:12 (NLT) ….. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
