Sermon Handout
- Matthew 25:14-30
Overview:
• Key verse: Matthew 25:23 (KJV)
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
• Moral of the story: Jesus entrusts enormous spiritual resources to His servants and will one day reckon with each of us for how we used them.
Definitions:
Talent: A “talent” was a unit of weight and money; Approximately 6,000 denarii per talent—many years’ wages. A “talent” was huge wealth, not just “natural skill.” Jesus has given ALL of us various amounts of time, talent and treasure.
Steward: We are only stewards, not owners, of everything we have. Our stewardship has eternal ramifications and should be taken very seriously. “Delivered unto them his goods” means everything we have belongs to the Lord.
Questions:
If Jesus audited your life this week like a business account, what ‘return’ would He see?” In your life, what might be a “five-talent” trust? A “two-talent” trust?
What would it look like this week for you to “trade” with what Jesus has given you?
Conclusions:
They both receive the same reward (“Well done… enter into the joy of thy lord”), despite different totals. Spurgeon and many evangelicals note: faithfulness, not size, is what Jesus rewards.
Monday Morning Moment: Are you actively using those trusts for His glory, or are you burying them?
