Text: Luke 7:36–39;44

Luke 7:36 – 39 (NLT) 36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. 37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.

38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“Ifthis man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”

Luke 7:44 (NASB)

44Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

• Simon physically saw her, but spiritually he did not see her. Simon saw her scandal. Jesus saw her faith.

Simon saw her past. Jesus saw her future. Simon saw her sins. Jesus saw her forgiveness. Simon saw waste. Jesus saw worship.

Simon

Simon is a religious man, but not a righteous man. He invites Jesus with his lips, but dishonors Him in his heart. He sees the woman’s sin but not his own. He knows the right answer but lacks the right spirit. He is a poster boy for “respectable sin” and how NOT to be a Christian.

The Woman

The woman is unnamed but not unseen. She is publicly known as sinful, yet she comes boldly and humbly to Jesus. She doesn’t say much, but notice her actions: she weeps, washes, wipes, kisses, and anoints Jesus’ feet. Remember, love is a VERB. Jesus declares her forgiven, saved by faith, and sent away in peace. She represents repentant faith and true love born from grace.
