- Job 42:2
- Psalm 135:6
Summary: Abraham was arguably the GOAT!!
Genesis 12:1 – 5 (KJV)
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
This is why Abraham SHOULD be studied closely:
1. God is sovereign and can do whatever He wants to do.
Psalm 135:6 – The LORD does whatever pleases him throughout all heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths.
Job 42:2 (NLT) 2 “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you.
2. God does NOT discriminate against old people! (or anybody)
- Moses was 80 when he was called to lead Israel out of Egypt
- Caleb was 80 when
Abraham was 75 years old when God called him, so age doesn’t need to be an obstacle to faith. Genesis 12:4 – 5 (NASB) 4So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
“Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you” (John 15:16).

God called Abraham out of idolatry (Josh. 24:2), when he was in Ur of the Chaldees (Gen. 11:28), a city devoted to Nannar, the moon-god.
1 Corinthians 1:26-29 (NLT)
26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.
27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.
28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.
29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
None of us deserve salvation nor can we earn salvation. Salvation is through God’s grace and by faith in Jesus.
So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
- In the Greek, he was called is a present participle, and the translation could be, “when he was being called.” In other words, as soon as he understood what God was saying, he started packing. It was instant obedience.
- The present participle for two actions at the same time.
Romans 4:3 (NLT)
3 For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”
Separation, but not isolation
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) 17This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2)
