Mark 3:31 – 35 (ESV)

31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him.

32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.”

33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”

34 And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

35 Whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

Luke 8:19 – 21 (ESV)

19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.

20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.”

21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Him

Mark 3:31 31 And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him.

John 7:3 – 5 (ESV) 5 For not even his brothers believed in him.

Mark 3:21 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him (Jesus), for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

Hearing vs. Listening: Martha and Mary

Luke 10:38 – 42 (ESV)

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.

40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”

41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

  • Lots of people hear, but few listen.
  • Listening means obeying, not just hearing.
  • God’s will is simply to listen (active hearing) to Him and obey what He says.
