Major Ideas: Timing and time were of the essence. It wasn’t so much what Martha was doing, but when(and how) she was doing it.

a. When – Jesus (God the son) is in your house/presence. He deserves ALL of our attention. Worship now! Work/serve later.

b. How – “distracted, worried, bothered, troubled, upset, cumbered” cumbered = hindered, block, stuck, held up.

  • Jesus called it “a good work” (Matt. 26:10; Mark 14:6) and both commended and defended her.
  • Jesus praised Mary for choosing the GOOD part, doing a GOOD thing to Him and… “A good name is better than precious ointment,” says Ecclesiastes 7:1; and Mary had both!!!

Walking Points

  1. All about me! (“I’m working all by myself”)

“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?” Luke 10:40a

1 Kings 19:9-18 (NASB) 9Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10 He said, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

14 Then he said, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

18“Yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

  1. Conflict and drama (“worried and upset”)

40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; “distracted, worried, bothered, troubled, upset, cumbered” cumbered = hindered, block, stuck, held up.

1 Corinthians 14:33 (NASB)

33 for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
