Matthew 5:3-12 (KJV)

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (devoid of spiritual arrogance)

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (lament over their sins and repent)

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (gentle power under control)

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (actively seek right standing with God)

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (graciously kind and forgiving)

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (integrity, moral courage, and godly character)

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (makers and maintainers of peace)

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. (suffering unjustly for being labeled a true Christian)

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

SOTM Key verse: Matt. 5:20 (KJV) 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

SOTM vocabulary: Kingdom of Heaven/Kingdom of God = All of creation belongs to God and is under His sovereign domain. Occupying a special place in God’s Kingdom is His people, believers in Jesus who have submitted to God’s authority and follow Him lovingly. (see Psalm 103:19 and John 3:5)

Blessed = Greek. – Makarios Hebrew – ash-Rei (ash-ray): security, stability, safety, prosperity, good fortune, joyful, complete happiness, flourishing; divine joy and perfect happiness. (Matt. 5:3)
