Types of Prayer in the Bible Adoration (Praise & Worship)

Honoring God for not only what He’s done but for who He is.

Psalm 95:6 KJV –“Ocome, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.”

Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:6 NLT-“Don’tworry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”

Supplication (Personal Requests)

James 5:13 KJV –“Isany among you afflicted? let himpray…”–NLT – “Are any of you suffering

hardships? You shouldpray…”

Intercession (Praying for Others)

1 Timothy 2:1 KJV –“Iexhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving

of thanks, be made for all men;”

Confession (Sin toward God)— The prayer of forgiveness

1 John 1:9 KJV –“Ifwe confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Jesus ties forgiveness to our prayer life:

Mark 11:25 (KJV)—“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought againstany…”

Some prayers are delayed because bitterness still exist. Forgiveness is something you actively do in prayer. You don’t wait for a feeling. You decide before God. Forgiveness is a command not a suggestion (Eph. 4:32)

Key Greek word study
Mark 11:25—“forgive”
Greek verb: aphiete – to send away, release, let go, cancel a debt
Here’s the point: you stop holding the offense as a claim over the person.

Colossians 3:13—“forgiving”
Greek verb: charizomenoi – to grant freely as a favor / show grace
Here’s the point: forgiveness flows from grace, not fairness. You get God, God will get even!

Colossians 3:13 (KJV) “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

Who initiates it? What the Bible says:

If you sinned→you go first = Matthew 5:23–24 (KJV)—“First be reconciled to thy brother…”

If they sinned against you→you still go first = Matthew 18:15 (KJV)—“goand tellhim…”The responsibility to pursue peace falls heavily on the mature believer—not on “who started it.”

Job intercedes for the very friends who hurt him

Job 42:10 10When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before!

• After his friends misrepresented him and God, God requires Job to pray for them.

A Biblical Pattern of a Forgiveness Prayer

1. Acknowledge our wrong (Psalm 51)
2. Refuse vengeance (Genesis 50:19)
3. Leave justice to God (Romans 12:19—“Vengeance is mine”)
4. Pray mercy over the offender (Luke 23:34)
5. Ask God to cleanse our heart (Psalm 51:10)
