Case Study #5: Repentance brings the sinner to reality and turns him toward the Father; The Father receives us!

Luke 15:17 — “And when he came to himself…”

Luke 15:18 — “I will arise and go to my father… Father, I have sinned…”

Luke 15:20 — “And he arose, and came to his father… his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran…”

REALITY — HE CAME TO HIMSELF

The turning point begins inside. He stops deceiving himself and starts seeing reality.

• He recognizes his condition — “I perish with hunger.”

• He remembers the Father’s goodness — “bread enough and to spare.”

• Conviction replaces self-deception.

REPENTANCE — I WILL GET UP AND GO

The son wakes up and repents. Repentance: changed direction = turn from sin and turn to God.

• Confession: “I have sinned against heaven, and before thee.”

• Humility: “I am no more worthy…”

• Action: v.20 — “he arose, and came.”

RECEPTION — HIS FATHER RAN

The highpoint is not merely the son’s return; it is the Father’s aggressive, compassionate response to the returning sinner.

• He saw him — God notices the returning sinner.

• He had compassion — God moves from the heart.

• He ran, embraced, and kissed — forgiveness moves toward restoration.

Monday Morning Moment: Come to yourself. Get up and go to the Father. Then watch how quickly He closes the distance. Luke 15:20 — “And he arose, and came to his father… his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran…”
