Luke 15:17 – 21 (NASB)

¹⁷“But when he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men

have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! (Interoception –Luke a physician; Col. 4:14)

¹⁸‘Iwill get up and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight;

¹⁹I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.”’

²⁰“Sohe got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

²¹“And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

REALITY — HE CAME TO HIMSELF

The turning point begins inside. He stops deceiving himself and starts seeing reality.

• He recognizes his condition — “I perish with hunger.”

• He remembers the Father’s goodness — “bread enough and to spare.”

• Conviction replaces self-deception.

REPENTANCE — I WILL GET UP AND GO

The son wakes up and repents. Repentance: changed direction = turn from sin and turn to God.

• Confession: “I have sinned against heaven, and before thee.”

• Humility: “I am no more worthy…”

• Action: v.20 — “he arose, and came.”

RECEPTION — HIS FATHER RAN

The highpoint is not merely the son’s return; it is the Father’s aggressive, compassionate response to the returning sinner.

• He saw him — God notices the returning sinner.

• He had compassion — God moves from the heart.

• He ran, embraced, and kissed — forgiveness moves toward restoration.

Jeremiah 31:18–19 “Turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my

God.”Then:“Surely after that I was turned, I repented…”

John 6:44 KJV“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw

him…”

Romans 2:4 (NLT) ⁴Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness(KJV: goodness) is intended to turn you from your sin?
