A quick summary of what the Bible says about our adversary:

  • Satan is a created being and is not equal to God. He is just a fallen angel. (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:13-17)

Ezekiel 28:12-17 (NLT)

  1. “Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: “You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.
  2. You were in Eden, the garden of God. (Gen. 3:1-15) Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone— red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone, blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper, blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald — all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created.
  3. I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian.
  4. “You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you.
  5. Your rich commerce led you to violence, and you sinned. So I banished you in disgrace from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire.
  6. Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. Your wisdom was corrupted by your love of splendor. So I threw you to the ground and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.

Isaiah 14:12-15 (KJV)

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 5Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Matthew 25:41 (ESV)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

  • The devil has very limited power and he is not omnipresent. But he does oversee legions of demons, called “the powers of this dark world and . . . the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). He uses this network to tempt and deceive people. He can only do what God allows (Job 1:12,1 John 4:4)

“But the Spirit of the Lord departed From Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him” (1 Samuel 16:14).

“And it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well”

“But the Spirit of the Lord departed From Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him” (1 Samuel 16:14).

“And it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well” (1 Samuel 16:16).

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever He will” (Proverbs 21:1).

1 John 4:4 (KJV) 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Demons can’t possess believers.

2 Corinthians 1:22 (KJV) 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Ephesians 1:13 – 14 (KJV) 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

James 3:10 (KJV) 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Romans 8:9 (ESV) 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

We can fight them. (Luke 10:17)

Luke 10:17 – 20 (KJV) 17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
